Greasing a locomotive

The central museum of Swedish railway history

The state-funded Swedish Railway Museum opened its doors in Stockholm in 1915. It was relocated in Gävle in 1970. The branch in Ängelholm was opened in 1998. The Swedish Railway Museum has been owned by Banverket (The Swedish National Rail Administration) since 2005.

As the body responsible for the Museum, Banverket receives annual funding from the Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications to acquire, look after and promulgate knowledge of Swedish railway history within the framework of a national collection.

The collection, which is one finest of its kind in the world, comprises close on 500 locos, carriages and wagons, and hundreds of thousands of other railway items. The best of these are on display. Most, however, are in storage. Several of our locos and a large selection of our rolling stock are used to make up the Museum’s vintage trains for passenger excursions to places of interest. The loco and rolling stock storehouse is open to visitors by prior arrangement.

Our collections include hundreds of thousands of items, about half a million photographs and pictures, a large amount of historic film material, an almost complete collection of railway literature, and a substantial amount of archival material. Much of the above can be searched on our web site. Both Gävle and Ängelholm have libraries that can be visited by arrangement.
